At Sunglow, we believe the benefits of using sunbeds go much further than just achieving a gorgeous tan. It's about supporting your wellness and gaining confidence in a safe, professional environment where you can fully relax.

Boosts vitamin D levels
UVB radiation triggers the natural production of vitamin D3 in the skin, a nutrient essential for improving bone health and regulating immune function.

Improves mental wellbeing

UV exposure encourages the brain to release serotonin ("the feel good hormone") and endorphins. This chemical response helps reduce stress, boost energy, and alleviate symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Relieves dry skin conditions

Regular, controlled UV radiation is a recognised dermatological treatment (phototherapy) for chronic skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo, and atopic dermatitis. It works by slowing down the rapid overproduction of skin cells and reducing localised inflammation.

Lowers blood pressure

UVA exposure stimulates the release of nitric oxide from stores in the skin into the bloodstream. This dilates blood vessels, which can lower blood pressure and potentially reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Provides a pre-holiday base tan

Introducing UV rays to your skin slowly and safely helps prepare it for the high temperatures you will feel abroad, reducing the likelihood of prickly heat and sunburn.

A quiet moment of "me time"
Life can be a lot sometimes. For many people, their sunbed session is the only chance they to fully switch off and relax. Stepping into a sunbed provides both physical and mental relaxation, a warm moment of escape from daily life we all need now and again.

Reduces acne

UV rays alleviate inflammation in the skin and temporarily dry out breakouts, including cystic acne. Repeated exposure shrinks active lesions and helps to reduce the overall appearance of oily skin.

Relaxes sore muscles

Consistent skin-to-heat contact on lie down sunbeds can ease minor joint pain/stiffness, and studies have even shown higher UV-B exposure may help reduce the long-term risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.

No mess or fuss

Unlike spray tans and self tanner, sunbeds provide natural, mess-free results with no streakiness or uneven colour and no colour transfer on clothes or bed sheets. They also won't cause skin irritations, allergic reactions or unsafe inhalation of dihydroxyacetone, the main ingredient in spray tan solution.

Boosts confidence levels

A bronzed glow minimises the appearance of skin imperfections such as scars, stretch marks and uneven pigmentation, triggering positive psychological changes that encourages more confidence. Many customers say a deeper skin complexion makes them feel more attractive and radiant.

Sunbeds certainly aren't a magic cure but when used carefully, they can become a part of your wellbeing routine.

ty of preferences and skin types, offering both stand-up and lie-down sunbeds in all our salons. Our facilities combine modern equipment with a welcoming and clean environment, ensuring everyone aged 18 and over can enjoy a comfortable tanning experience. Whether clients seek a quick, efficient session or a more relaxed approach, our range of sunbeds accommodates different tanning styles and needs. This introduction sets the stage for a detailed comparison of stand-up versus lie-down sunbeds, helping you understand which option aligns best with your personal tanning routine and comfort.

Comparing Stand-Up and Lie-Down Sunbeds: Key Features and Benefits

Stand-up and lie-down sunbeds use the same principle: UV tubes surround the body and deliver controlled exposure to the skin. The difference lies in how the body sits within that light field and how weight, posture, and movement change the experience and the end result.

Stand-up sunbeds position you upright in a cabin with tubes arranged in a full circle. You stand in the centre, usually holding overhead grips to keep the arms lifted. This design gives near 360-degree coverage and reduces pressure points, so there are fewer pale areas where skin presses against the acrylic. Because you stay active and the tubes sit close to the whole body, stand-up sessions are often slightly shorter for the same depth of colour.

We see stand-up beds suit tanners who prefer quick, focused sessions and do not want to lie down. They work well for people who like to minimise white patches on shoulder blades, hips, or the backs of the legs. The upright position also keeps airflow moving, which some find cooler and fresher during higher-output sessions.

Lie-down sunbeds use a flat acrylic base and a hinged canopy above. You rest on the base, and the canopy closes to bring the tubes to the correct distance from the skin. This shape still gives all-over exposure, but with more contact points where the body meets the surface. Those contact areas can tan a little slower, though modern bed design keeps the difference modest when sessions follow a consistent plan.

We regard lie-down sunbeds as the most comfortable option and often suggest them for beginners or those with fair skin building a base colour. The relaxed position makes it easier to stay still for gentle, shorter sessions while you learn how your skin responds. Many users also prefer lie-down beds for winding down after work, as they feel closer to resting on a lounger than standing in a booth.

Sunglow Aesthetics salons offer both stand-up and lie-down sunbeds so we can match bed style, lamp strength, and session length to individual tanning goals and skin types.

Comfort Levels And User Experience In Stand-Up Vs Lie-Down Sunbeds

Comfort on a sunbed has less to do with the lamps and more to do with how your body sits, moves, and heats over a few minutes. Once we know how you like to feel during a session, matching you to stand-up or lie-down becomes simpler.

Lie-down sunbeds use contoured acrylic and cushioning to spread your weight across the surface. The body relaxes, muscles let go, and breathing settles, so the experience feels closer to resting on a lounger than using equipment. Many people with joint stiffness, tired legs, or lower-back tension find this position easier because there is no need to support their own weight or hold a grip.

Heat on a lie-down bed builds in a different way. Because there are more contact points with the acrylic, the skin feels a steady, even warmth, especially across the back and hips. Modern ventilation runs along the length of the bed, so air moves across the face and body even while you stay still. There is little need to adjust position, apart from small shifts of the arms or head.

By contrast, stand-up sunbeds rely on an upright posture and space around the body. You stand on a small platform inside a cabin, feet planted, with enough room to change stance or stretch the shoulders. This extra space suits those who dislike feeling enclosed or who prefer not to lie down on a shared surface.

Because you stay vertical, blood flow remains closer to your everyday standing posture, which some find more energising than lying flat. The air column in the cabin also helps heat disperse; warm air rises past the lamps and out of the top vents, while cooler air enters from below. The result feels less like resting and more like a short, focused burst of light and warmth.

Movement on a stand-up bed is easier. Small turns at the waist, bending the knees slightly, or alternating weight between feet changes how the light reaches different angles of the body. This freedom suits those who like to stay active and who prefer not to commit to one fixed pose for the whole session.

Personal conditions make a real difference. Someone with knee pain may prefer to take pressure off the joints on a lie-down bed. Someone with a sensitive lower back might actually feel better standing, where they can keep the spine in a neutral position. Claustrophobia, sinus issues when lying flat, or simple preference for privacy and quick entry and exit all guide the choice as well.

Heat tolerance also varies. If you dislike the feeling of enclosed warmth, a stand-up cabin with more open airflow often feels more manageable. If you want a calm, cocooned rest after a busy day, the enclosed canopy and steady heat of a lie-down bed may suit you better.

We see these comfort details matter as much as tanning depth. When comfort, posture, and heat feel right, it is easier to follow a consistent plan and keep sessions within safe timings that match your skin type.

Sunbed Session Times And Efficiency: What To Expect

Once comfort feels settled, time becomes the next practical question: how long to stay on the bed, how often to return, and how that fits into a week. Session planning blends bed style, lamp strength, and skin type, and we keep those elements aligned so colour builds in a steady, predictable way.

Stand-up beds usually run on shorter sessions. The lamps sit close to the whole body, coverage is high, and you stay upright with fewer pressure points, so exposure works quickly. For most users this means briefer bursts of light spread across the week rather than long stays in the cabin.

Lie-down beds often run a little longer for a similar depth of tan. You rest on the acrylic, so the areas in full contact tend to tan more slowly than exposed sides and shoulders. Extending the time slightly keeps colour balanced, especially when you are building a base tan from lighter starting skin.

We follow the same safety logic for both: shorter, more frequent sessions build better results than trying to squeeze everything into one visit. Fair or sensitive skin usually starts with the minimum minutes and longer gaps between sessions. Medium tones work well with moderate times two or three days apart. Naturally darker skin can tolerate more minutes once a base is in place, while still respecting maximum weekly exposure guidance.

All Sunglow salons follow a 30-minute last-bed rule. We set the final start time for any session to half an hour before closing, so each client finishes safely and staff have time to check the equipment. When you plan a visit, aim to arrive early enough for check-in, any questions, and the full programmed session before that last-bed cut-off.

Ideal Use Cases And Skin Types For Stand-Up And Lie-Down Sunbeds

Choosing between stand-up and lie-down beds starts with skin behaviour rather than preference alone. We look at how quickly you flush, how easily you freckle, and how your skin has reacted to sun or sunbeds in the past. Those details shape the first plan, then we adjust based on how you actually tan.

Fair or reactive skin usually benefits from gradual, shorter sessions on lie-down beds. The calmer position and steady warmth suit those new to indoor tanning or returning after a long break. It is easier to stop early if the skin looks pink, and to build a base shade before considering higher-output stand-up units. This approach also suits anyone with sensitivity on the chest, shoulders, or face, where overexposure shows first.

Medium or deeper skin tones, or experienced tanners who already hold colour, often favour stand-up cabins for an even tan and efficient use of time. The upright stance and near 360-degree coverage help reduce lighter patches around the hips, underarms, and backs of the legs. Those who feel comfortable standing for a few minutes tend to appreciate the quick in-and-out rhythm and the more active feel.

Physical needs influence the choice as well. If you live with joint stiffness, muscle fatigue, or want gentle warmth to ease aches after work, a lie-down bed offers clearer rest. For those who struggle lying flat, have sinus pressure when reclining, or prefer more airflow, stand-up beds avoid that strain while still delivering controlled exposure.

Event or holiday timing adds another layer. For weddings, photos, or trips, we usually pair consistent lie-down sessions for the first build-up with stand-up top-ups nearer the date to even out stubborn lighter areas. That mix keeps colour smoother while keeping within safe exposure limits.

We always suggest a brief, informal chat with a member of our team before changing bed type or session length. Their job is to match sunbed types for skin types, experience level, and goals, then keep an eye on how your skin responds over time.

Pricing Structure For Stand-Up And Lie-Down Sunbed Sessions

Cost often decides whether someone chooses stand-up or lie-down, so we keep the structure clear and predictable across all Sunglow Aesthetics salons. Prices differ by bed type and session length, but the logic stays the same: higher-output beds and longer minutes sit slightly higher, while shorter, lower-output sessions stay entry-level.

We organise pricing into three main options. Single sessions suit occasional tanners who drop in before an event or top up existing colour. You pay per visit, with a set number of minutes on either a stand-up or lie-down bed. This keeps things simple if you tan rarely or want to test a new bed style.

Minute bundles give more value for those who tan regularly but do not want to commit to a fixed schedule. You buy a block of minutes at a reduced rate compared with single sessions, then draw from that balance across both stand-up and lie-down units, within salon guidelines. This structure spreads cost while still rewarding consistency.

Courses sit at the top of the value ladder. They group a planned series of sessions, usually over several weeks, at our most competitive rate per minute. Courses suit those building or maintaining a steady tan through the year and align with our slogan: Great value, great tans. Regular offers run across these options so pricing flexibility supports occasional visitors, seasonal tanners, and frequent users without needing complex calculations.

Walk-In Tanning At Sunglow: Convenience Without Appointments

Walk-in tanning sits at the centre of how we run Sunglow Aesthetics. All three salons operate on a no-appointment basis for sunbed use, so you decide on the day whether a stand-up boost or a more relaxing lie-down sunbed fits your mood and schedule.

For many clients, tanning is squeezed between work, school runs, and other errands rather than booked weeks ahead. Dropping in without a fixed slot makes it easier to keep a steady routine, whether that means brief stand-up sessions on busy weekdays or longer lie-down visits when you have more time.

To keep this flexible approach orderly, we manage salon flow carefully. Each visit starts with check-in at the desk, where we confirm your minutes, advise on timing, and match you to an available bed. If several people arrive together, we stagger sessions across different units so waiting time stays manageable and rooms stay calm and tidy.

All branches follow the 30-minute last-bed rule. The final session of the day must start at least half an hour before closing, which protects full programmed minutes, allows for changing and cleaning, and avoids rushing anyone through the process. When you look at Sunglow Hadley and Shrewsbury hours or the Lawley timetable, aim to arrive with that cut-off in mind so your walk-in visit feels unhurried and predictable.

Sunglow Salon Locations And Opening Hours Including Last-Bed Rule

Our three Sunglow Aesthetics salons in Shropshire all offer both stand-up and lie-down tanning beds, with opening hours shaped around work, family, and weekend routines. The 30-minute last-bed rule applies at each site, so the final sunbed session must start at least half an hour before closing. That window protects full sunbed session times and gives space for cleaning and checks.

Hadley And Shrewsbury Opening Hours

Sunglow Hadley and Sunglow Shrewsbury share the same timetable:

Monday-Friday: 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM (last bed by 8:30 PM)
Saturday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM (last bed by 5:30 PM)
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM (last bed by 3:30 PM)

These extended weekday evenings work well for those who prefer a quick stand-up session after work or a slower lie-down visit once the day has settled.

Lawley Opening Hours

Sunglow Lawley opens slightly earlier during the week:

Monday-Friday: 8:30 AM - 8:30 PM (last bed by 8:00 PM)
Saturday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM (last bed by 5:30 PM)
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM (last bed by 3:30 PM)

The earlier start at Lawley supports pre-work stand-up or lie-down sessions, while the shared evening and weekend pattern across all locations keeps planning consistent wherever you choose to tan.

Sunglow Salon Etiquette And Policies For A Comfortable Visit

We run our salons on simple, consistent etiquette so every visit feels calm, clean, and safe. Hygiene starts with timing: arrive a few minutes early so there is no need to rush changing, preparing, or leaving the room.

We clean and disinfect the sunbed acrylic, touchpoints, and handles between each user. Staff reset the room, empty bins, and check that towels, tissues, and cleaning supplies sit where they should. There is no need to spray or wipe the bed yourself unless a member of the team asks you to for a specific reason.

Protective goggles are mandatory for every session. We advise against using improvised eye covers, as they do not shield the eyes from UV in the same way. Tanning lotions must be bed-safe; heavy oils or staining creams are not allowed because they mark acrylics and room surfaces.

Noise and privacy matter. Keep phones on silent, speak quietly in shared areas, and avoid lingering outside room doors so others can change and prepare in peace.

All Sunglow Aesthetics salons operate an 18+ policy, and we follow UK age restrictions without exception. We expect clients to follow staff instructions on timings, skin assessments, and bed choice, as that guidance protects skin health and keeps sunbed tanning results consistent over time.

Sunglow's Management Team And Sunbed Association Membership

Sunglow Aesthetics is run by a close family management team who stay directly involved in daily salon life. We oversee bed choice, staff training, cleanliness, and pricing so standards stay consistent whether someone prefers stand-up or lie-down sunbeds, or buys tanning minutes online across multiple visits.

Each salon has on-site supervisors who report into the family directors. Their role is simple and practical: keep equipment performing correctly, ensure staff follow skin-type guidance, and support clients with clear advice on session times and frequency. This structure means decisions about lamp changes, new bed models, or changes to sunbed session times are made by people who understand both the technical side and the way clients actually tan.

We are members of The Sunbed Association, which sets recognised industry standards for indoor tanning. Membership guides how we manage UV output, enforce age restrictions, and present safety information. It also keeps our team aligned with current best practice on responsible exposure, informed consent, and client education, so the service behind each session is as considered as the equipment itself.

Choosing between stand-up and lie-down sunbeds depends on your personal comfort, tanning goals, session duration, and skin type. Sunglow Aesthetics offers both options across its salons to accommodate a wide range of preferences and needs, ensuring you can find the best fit for your tanning style. Whether you prefer the quick, active experience of a stand-up bed or the relaxing, restful feel of a lie-down unit, our team is ready to help you select the right approach for steady, natural-looking results. We encourage you to visit any Sunglow salon for a walk-in session and receive tailored advice from our friendly staff. For added convenience, buying tanning minutes online allows you to manage your tanning time easily and flexibly.
